On Friday afternoon HBO released another teaser for “His Dark Materials,” the sci-fi fantasy series coming to the network later this year. The show is an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s award-winning trilogy of the same name, which you may know as “The Golden Compass.”

You still have time to read the original work before diving into the adaptation; you can find them right here on Amazon.

According to HBO’s announcement, the first season follows Lyra, a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Lyra’s search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As Lyra journeys through the worlds, including our own, she meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living — and the dead — in their hands.

Fans of the genre can watch the first official trailer for Season 1 below. HBO stopped short of announcing a premiere date at this time, only telling fans that the show is coming “soon.”

The adaptation stars James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anne-Marie Duff, Clarke Peters, Ariyon Bakare, Will Keen, Ian Gelder, Georgina Campbell, Lewin Lloyd, Lucian Msamati, James Cosmo, Daniel Frogson, Tyler Howitt, Ruta Gedmintas, Mat Fraser, Geoff Bell, and Simon Manyonda.

Tom Hooper directed the first two episodes for HBO, with Dawn Shadforth directing episode three. Otto Bathhurst directed episodes four and five, and Euros Lyn directed the sixth episode. Jamie Childs directed the final two episodes, which are episode seven and episode eight.

The first book in the series, ‘Northern Lights,’ also went by the name ‘The Golden Compass.’ A movie adaptation was made in 2007 with director Chris Weitz. The film featured Daniel Craig, Eva Green, and Sam Elliott.
