Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” spent the last three weeks at the top of the box office, but “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” is trending to topple the current champion. Lionsgate’s action-thriller brought in almost $6M in Thursday night previews across 3,000 locations. That’s more than double the box office score of “John Wick: Chapter 2,” which brought in $2.2M in previews. The $6M haul ranks as the third-highest preview gross for a Lionsgate franchise, behind “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight.”

The first “John Wick” movie released quietly in 2014, with a $14M opening across 2,589 theaters. Directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, the first installment went on to make over $88M for the studio. Chad Stahelski returned to the franchise in 2017 to direct “John Wick: Chapter Two,” which made $30M in 3,113 locations on opening weekend. The sequel ended its theatrical run with a worldwide gross of $171.5M. Chad Stahelski directed the third installment to the franchise, which is already on its way to the top of the domestic box office charts.

“Avengers: Endgame” is averaging a 56% decrease in domestic gross for each weekend that the film is in theaters. After the film’s record-breaking $357M domestic opening, the film made $147M the following weekend, and $63M last weekend. If “Avengers: Endgame” follows this trend, it will make an estimated $29M this coming weekend. “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” is trending to make well over $30M on its opening weekend, putting it ahead of Marvel’s blockbuster.

“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” isn’t the only film hoping to take down “Avengers: Endgame.” Universal Pictures’ family drama, “A Dog’s Journey,” brought in an estimated $275K in previews across 2,450 theaters on Thursday. A sequel, the movie only made about half of the $455k in previews that the original film, “A Dog’s Purpose,” made in 2017.

At the limited box office, moviegoers can also see “The Sun is Also a Star,” from director Ry Russo-Young. Based on the novel by Nicola Yoon, the YA romantic drama stars Yara Shahidi, Charles Melton, and Keong Sim.
