Gerard Butler is back with another action-thriller this summer called “Angel has Fallen.” The new movie is the third installment featuring Butler’s Mike Banning character, following “Olympus has Fallen” and “London has Fallen.” The movie is scheduled to hit theaters this August, and fans can get a first-look at the story below.
The film picks up after an assassination attempt on U.S. President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), and his trusted Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is wrongfully accused and taken into custody. After escaping from capture, he becomes a man on the run and must evade his own agency and outsmart the FBI in order to find the real threat to the President. The studio teased the film adding, “Desperate to uncover the truth, Banning turns to unlikely allies to help clear his name, keep his family from harm and save the country from imminent danger.”
Ric Roman Waugh directed the film, working from a screenplay he worked on with Robert Mark Kamen and Matt Cook. Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt created the characters.
Antoine Fuqua directed “Olympus has Fallen” for the studio back in 2013, and the film made over $170M worldwide. The success pushed “London has Fallen” into production, with Babak Najafi directing the sequel in 2016. The follow up thriller made over $205M for the studio.
Lionsgate will release “Angel has Fallen” in theaters on August 23, 2019. The other big August releases in the same demographic are “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Kitchen” releasing earlier in the month. The horror-thriller “47 Meters Down” releases against the crime-drama “The Informer” the following weekend, with “Angel has Fallen” battling the drama “Overcomer” and the horror-thriller “Ready or Not.”
