Disney dropped a first-look trailer for “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” which is coming to theaters in October. The sequel continues the story of Maleficent, and this new installment picks up several years after the first film.

On social media Disney described the film adding, “The film continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”

Joachim Rønning directed the film for the studio, working from a story by Linda Woolverton. Linda Woolverton and Micah Fitzerman-Blue & Noah Harpster produced the screenplay. Robert Stromberg directed the original film but did not return for the follow up.

Earlier this year, Disney bumped “Maleficent 2” to October 18th, which was seven months earlier than the studio initially planned. The first film in the franchise released in 2014 and made $69M on opening weekend before grossing over $758M worldwide.

Angelina Jolie will once again star in the title role, with several new faces added to the cast. Starring alongside Angelina Jolie in the film are Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. These actors are reprising their roles from the first “Maleficent,” they will be joined by newcomers Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Harris Dickinson, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

“Maleficent” is releasing during a busy month at the box office. Starting off October is Todd Phillips’ “Joker” movie with Joaquin Phoenix. “Joker” is opening against “The Woman in the Window,” a thriller directed by Joe Wright and starring Amy Adams. The following weekend is the release of the animated-comedy “The Addams Family” and Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man” with Clive Owen, Will Smith, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

“Maleficent 2” will battle “Zombieland 2: Double Tap” with Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, Zoey Deutch, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Rosario Dawson on opening weekend.
