IFC Films dropped the first-look trailer for “Ophelia” on Tuesday. Directed by Claire McCarthy, working off a screenplay written by Semi Chellas, the film features Daisy Ridley, Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, George Mackay, and Tom Felton. While the story is set in the 14th Century, you’ll find a contemporary voice and new take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
In the film, Ophelia (Daisy Ridley) takes center stage as Queen Gertrude’s (Naomi Watts) most trusted lady-in-waiting. IFC Films describes the film saying, “Beautiful and intelligent, she soon captures the attention of the handsome Prince Hamlet (George MacKay) and a forbidden love blossoms. As war brews, lust and betrayal are tearing Elsinore Castle apart from within and Ophelia must decide between her true love or her own life in order to protect a very dangerous secret.”
The film was part of the Sundance Film Festival, and overall audiences seem to agree with the film more than traditional critics. McCarthy talked about the project adding, “This version of Ophelia has much more dimension and gravitas than she was afforded in Shakespeare’s original story. In our retelling it is my hope that an audience can re-experience the Hamlet they know and love, with added delight and whimsy and insight due the shift of the narrative axis.” McCarthy continued, “This is a period setting, but this retelling of Ophelia’s story is also fresh and dynamic and finally gives light to her struggles, and perspective. The story has an adrenalin-charged pace, strong perilous thriller elements, powerful character relationships and dynamic female roles, a cracking romance and epic setting.”
Fans can set a reminder to look for the film on June 28th, or on VOD on July 5th.
Daisy Ridley has several projects in the works, but “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is still the biggest. The film, which ends the new trilogy and closes the book on the Skywalker story line, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 20th.
