After the death of Luke Perry, it was uncertain if FOX would continue its plans to host a six-episode special with the cast of Beverly Hills “90210.” The show was announced a few weeks before the actor’s death, and Perry was expected to star in the short series. Now we know that the show is definitely back on, and FOX confirmed that original star Shannen Doherty has joined the cast. Doherty joins fellow co-stars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling. The series is going by the hashtag-ready name “BH90210.”

Doherty starred as “Brenda Walsh” on the teen drama for four seasons. The show won’t be a regular reunion show; it will instead be a staged reunion show. The cast will be playing “heightened versions of themselves” according to FOX, and the show is a serialized drama. The network stated that the event will offer “a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships with each other.”

FOX describes the show “Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Shannen, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?”

Doherty is getting an executive-producer credit in the show, alongside Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, Patrick Sean Smith, Gabrielle Carteris, Jennie Garth, Brian Austin Green, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, and Ian Ziering. The series was conceived by Alberghini, Chessler, Spelling, and Garth.

After the death of Luke Perry, the network could be taking a risk running a satire of the show that made him a household name. Hosting a comedy series so soon after one of the leads actor’s death, even if was already in motion, could backfire on the cast and network.

BH90210 will be produced by CBS Television Studios and FOX Entertainment.
