It took 24hrs for “Avengers: Endgame” to start breaking records. The new Marvel film earned $60M over Thursday night preview screenings, becoming the highest-grossing Thursday night opening at the box office of all-time. Many theaters across the country began screening the film at sundown on Thursday, and many of those locations plan to remain open 24hrs a day throughout the weekend.
Not only is “Avengers: Endgame” doing well when compared to traditional blockbusters, the film is even doing well when compared to other Marvel movies. “Avengers: Infinity War” grossed $39M on Thursday night previews, which held the record in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before “Endgame” released this weekend. When compared to other titans, Marvel still took the lead by a wide margin. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” earned $57M in previews, and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi “ made $45M. With its $60M Thursday night haul, “Avengers: Endgame” is now the film to beat, and it’s just getting started.
“Avengers: Infinity War” still holds the record for highest-grossing opening weekend with its $257M domestic debut. Before the Thursday night numbers came in, most early estimates had “Avengers: Endgame” opening with $260M to $270M. “Avengers: Endgame” was always projected to have the highest-grossing opening of all-time, but now sources are estimating that the film could break the $300M mark on opening weekend. That would be a first for the industry and a fantastic way for Marvel to end it’s 22 film story-line.
Disney is hoping to crush “Avengers: Infinity War’s” $640M global launch. Right now, “Endgame” has a shot at reaching a $1B global launch over weekend. Just like it did with “Aquaman,” China is the main reason for the sudden surge in global box office numbers, but “Endgame” is also breaking records across the globe.
The other records that “Avengers: Endgame” could beat is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” $936M domestic total in theaters; and “Avatar’s” $2.7B worldwide total in theaters.
