A24 confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence is headed back to the big screen for a new project with Lila Neugebauer. The popular stage director is making her feature debut with screenwriter Elizabeth Sanders, but details on the project are slim. A24 confirmed the rumors in a Tweet earlier this afternoon telling followers, “JLaw back from sabbatical,” with a link to a THR article announcing Lawrence’s involvement in the project.
Since 2016 Lawrence has starred in “X-Men: Apocalypse;” the horror-thriller “Mother!;” and the spy-thriller “Red Sparrow.” Lawrence’s latest film, “Dark Phoenix,” is another installment utilizing her X-Men character Mystique. That film is scheduled to release on June 7, 2019.
Adam McKay is currently working on an adaptation of John Carreyrou’s book “Bad Blood,” in which Jennifer Lawrence is expected to star. Vanessa Taylor is adapting the book for the studio, but no release date has been set for the bio-drama at this time.
According to early reports, the new Neugebauer film will start production in June, with an estimated release date in 2020. Not only will this be the feature debut for Neugebauer, but it will also be a first for screenwriter Elizabeth Sanders.
Neugebauer hit Broadway last year with a reboot of Kenneth Lonergan’s “The Waverly Gallery.” That project featured Elaine May and Lucas Hedges when it debuted. Neugebauer also worked on Tracy Letts’ “Mary Page Marlowe,” Edward Albee’s “At Home at the Zoo/The Zoo Story,” Sarah DeLappe’s “The Wolves” and Annie Baker’s “The Antipodes.”
While Lawrence has frequently joined big franchises like X-Men and The Hunger Games, her awards stem from smaller projects like “American Hustle,” “Joy,” “Winter’s Bone,” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” Lawrence has been nominated for four Academy Awards in just the five-years between 2011 and 2016. The popular star picked up an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her work in “Silver Linings Playbook,” and has won three out four Golden Globe nominations.
