‘Hellboy’ Struggles with a $12M Opening Weekend
Four new films hit theaters this week, offering something new to watch in almost every genre. Unfortunately for the studios, not all of the new releases connected with audiences. “Hellboy,” “After,” “Little,” and “Missing Link” launched in theaters across the country, each hoping to cash in before competing with “Avengers: Endgame” at the end of the month. It was a rough weekend all around, except for the specialty box office, where female rockers soared to glory.
Now in its second week in theaters, “Shazam!” made another $25M across 4,306 locations. The film has now made over $94M for Warner Bros. Pictures domestically. “Shazam” was directed by David F. Sandberg, the film features Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Djimon Hounsou, Meagan Good, and Adam Brody.
Universal Pictures’ “Little” landed in second-place, bringing in $15.4M across 2,667 locations. “Little” was directed by Tina Gordon Chism and stars Regina Hall, Issa Rae, and Marsai Martin.
Lionsgate’s “Hellboy” reboot debuted in third-place overall on the domestic charts, bringing in $12M across 3,303 locations nationwide. Neil Marshall directed “Hellboy,” the film stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Thomas Haden Church, and Sophie Okonedo.
“Pet Sematary,” from Paramount Pictures, dropped to fourth-place on the charts, bringing in $10M across 3,585 locations and bumping the film’s two-week total to just over $41M domestically. “Pet Sematary” was directed by Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer; the film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow.
Disney’s “Dumbo” remained on the top five chart for another week, bringing in $9M at 3,706 locations. Now in its third week in theaters, “Dumbo” has made over $89.9M domestically for Disney. “Dumbo” was directed by Tim Burton; the film features Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton, and Eva Green.
Not making the top five but worth mentioning are this week’s other new releases. The YA romantic-drama “After” made $6.2M across 2,138 locations this weekend, while “Missing Link” made $5.8M across 3,413 locations. “After” was directed by Jenny Gage and features Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Chris Butler directed “Missing Link,” the film features the voice talents of Zach Galifianakis, Hugh Jackman, Zoe Saldana, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, and Timothy Olyphant.
At the specialty box office, “Teen Spirit” made $44K; the film was directed by Max Minghella and stars Elle Fanning and Rebecca Hall. “Her Smell” made $39K at 3 locations this weekend, the film was written and directed by Alex Ross Perry and features Elisabeth Moss, Cara Delevingne, and Dan Stevens.
Next weekend won’t have as many releases; moviegoers looking for something new can choose between Roxann Dawson’s “Breakthrough” drama with Chrissy Metz and Topher Grace and Disneynature’s “Penguins” documentary.
