Singer Camila Cabello is reportedly joining a modern adaptation of the Cinderella story. The popular singer, performer, and VMA Artist of the Year will be starring in a new version of the classic tale with Kay Cannon directing. A longtime producer and writer, you might know Cannon’s work from the 2018 adult-comedy “Blockers” with Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz. “Blockers” was the feature debut for Cannon as a director, and this new Cinderella project will be Cabello’s debut as an actor. THR reported that Sony is fast-tracking the project, which means it could be ready for late 2020.

Sony Pictures is handling the adaptation, which does not have a release date or supporting cast at this time. James Corden, of “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” is producing the film and is one of the driving forces behind the project. Always a fan of musicals and pop-stars, we are excited to see what Corden and Cabello come up with together.

The Cinderella role has been a popular choice with young actors over the years. Cabello joins Drew Barrymore, Hilary Duff, and Lily James, all three played a version of the poor stepdaughter turned princess.

Movie studios like a good Cinderella story, literally this time, as they have proven time and time again to be profitable. Disney’s original animated “Cinderella” pulled in over $93M in theaters since its release in 1950, and the live-action adaptation with Lily James made over $543M for the studio in 2015. “A Cinderella Story” with Hilary Duff, Jennifer Coolidge, and Chad Michael Murray was also a significant hit for Warner Bros. Pictures, bringing in over $70M from an estimated $19M budget. Andy Tennant’s “Ever After:
A Cinderella Story” with Drew Barrymore made $98M in 1998, working from an estimated budget of $26M.

Sony Pictures hasn’t announced the casting at this time, but more information will be released as the film moves into production.

This new adaptation is expected to be a modern re-imagining, but Cabello is expected to play a down on her luck stepdaughter living with a hellish stepmother. Since Cabello is taking the lead role, it’s safe to say that there might be some singing.
