Academy Award Winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon, Apollo 13) and six-time Academy Award Nominee and two-time Golden Globe Winner Amy Adams (Vice, Sharp Objects, upcoming: Woman in the Window) are teaming up for a new project at Netflix. The movie is an adaptation of “Hillbilly Elegy,” based on the bestselling memoir by J.D. Vance.
According to Netflix, the story is “a modern exploration of the American Dream and three generations of an Appalachian family as told by its youngest member, a Yale Law student forced to return to his hometown.”
Netflix also confirmed that Vanessa Taylor (The Shape of Water) will adapt the screenplay for the movie. Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Karen Lunder are producing the film, with Julie Oh and J.D. Vance serving as executive producers on the project.
The video streaming service stopped short of announcing a premiere date at this time, but more information should be announced over the next few months. While Netflix did confirm Amy Adams in today’s announcement, we will have to wait a little longer to learn the names of the rest of the cast. We will most likely hear about the supporting cast a few months before Netflix drops the first teaser-trailer with the premiere date.
Adams recently appeared in Adam McKay’s “Vice” with Christian Bale and Steve Carell. Adams played the role of Lynne Cheney, a role that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Adams was also nominated for the same category at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.
Adams will appear in the mystery drama “The Woman in the Window” from director Joe Wright later this year. That adaptation is scheduled to release in October and also stars Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Brian Tyree Henry, and Anthony Mackie.
