The upcoming thriller “Midsommar” is being bumped up to July 3rd. A24 confirmed that the film will be moving from its originally scheduled release of August 9th to the more fitting mid-summer release date in July. The new release changes the film’s competition at the box office but doesn’t exactly make it any easier.

“Midsommar” was scheduled to hit theaters the same weekend as Disney’s “Artemis Fowl” adaptation, and the horror-thriller “Scary Stories to tell in the Dark.” That is the same weekend that the drama “Brian Branks;” Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Kitchen;” and “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” is scheduled to release. That’s a lot of films for one weekend, and “Midsommar” is taking a less crowded weekend in July. Now “Midsommar” will now release against Sony Pictures’ “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” The thriller should attract a different demographic than Spider-Man, and the Marvel hero has scared away the rest of the competition. The following week “Midsommar” will have to battle the crime-thriller “21 Bridges” with Chadwick Boseman; the horror-thriller “Crawl;” and FOX’s comedy “Stuber” with Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani.

A24’s “Midsommar” features Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, William Jackson Harper, and Jack Reynor. Ari Aster (Hereditary) wrote and directed “Midsommar” for the studio, and the story picks up when a young woman joins her boyfriend on a summer trip, and things go horribly wrong. The studio released a teaser for the film earlier this year, you can watch that video below.

A24 has a cult following of its own, and fans of the studio can look for the next big release, “High Life,” on April 5th. Claire Denis directed the film for the studio, and the movie features Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Andre Benjamin, and Mia Goth. Denis co-wrote the script with Jean-Pol Fargeau.

Another big project from A24 is the crime-thriller “Under the Silver Lake,” starring Riley Keough, Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, and Topher Grace. David Robert Mitchell wrote and directed the film, which is releasing on April 19th.
