An October opening is a perfect fit for “The Addams Family,” but it will have to battle Disney at the box office. “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” with Angelina Jolie, Ed Skrein, Michelle Pfeiffer, Elle Fanning, and Juno Temple is opening around the same time as “The Addams Family,” so the the films will have to battle to be king Halloween king. The first “Maleficent” movie opened with a PG rating, so MGM could be hoping to grab the attention of the tinier-tots who are not old enough to see the film, but are still in the Halloween spirit.

Paramount Pictures released a live-action adaptation of “The Addams Family” in 1991. That film opened at the top of the box office with a $29M debut and made over $191M worldwide. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld the film starred Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Dan Hedaya, and Christina Ricci. The success of the film launched “Addams Family Values” in 1993. The sequel won its opening weekend with a $14M debut but failed to beat the original after only making $48M worldwide. Sonnenfeld returned to direct the sequel, which featured Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, Christopher Lloyd, Joan Cusack, and Christina Ricci.

David Levy created the original TV series, which starred John Astin, Carolyn Jones, Jackie Coogan, Lisa Loring, and Ken Weatherwax. The black and white series ran from 1964 to 1966.
