Sony Pictures has set a Digital release date for “Escape Room.” The horror-thriller will release on Digital HD on April 9th, followed by the Blu-ray and DVD version on April 23rd.
“Escape Room” did well in theaters but was overshadowed by “Aquaman” when it released back in January. Made with an estimated budget of $9M, the film grossed over $18.2M on opening weekend and made over $149M worldwide. The beginning of the year was a little more crowded than usual at the box office, with “Aquaman,” “Escape Room,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Bumblebee” all competing against each other.
Adam Robitel (Insidious: The Last Key) directed the thriller for Sony Pictures; the film stars Taylor Russell (Lost in Space), Logan Miller (Love, Simon), Deborah Ann Woll (“True Blood”), Jay Ellis (“Insecure”), Tyler Labine (“New Amsterdam”) and Nik Dodani (Atypical) with Yorick van Wageningen (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
The story follows six strangers who must solve sinister puzzles and overcome life-threatening challenges set in hazardous environments. Initially, they think they have gathered for a highly immersive escape room, but they soon make the sickening discovery that they are pawns in a sadistic game of life and death. Together, they move from one terrifying scenario to the next as they find clues and solve puzzles. But the players soon learn that exposing their darkest secrets may hold the key to survive.
“Escape Room” was directed by Adam Robitel and written by Bragi Schut and Maria Melnik based on a story by Schut.
