This year DC is celebrating Batman’s 80th birthday. The big event is March 30th, and DC’s Detective Comics released a special #1000 issue that puts Batman in the spotlight. The publisher announced that over 600K copies of the issue were pre-ordered by fans, proving that Batman is just as popular as ever. The publisher also released a special hardcover edition available for fans, along with a collection of works from some of Batman’s most popular writers and illustrators. March 30th is considered Batman’s birthday, since Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 on March 30th 1939.

The #1000 issue is a 96-page collector’s edition issue that features all-star writers and artists paying tribute to the caped crusader. Inside the issue, DC celebrates Batman through a series of seven-to-nine-page standalone short stories. A special highlight of the issue is an original story revealing a never-before-seen iteration of the Arkham Knight, written by New York Times best-selling author Peter J. Tomasi with artwork by Doug Mahnke.

The hardcover “Detective Comics: 80 Years of Batman the Deluxe Edition” is also available. From guest editor Paul Levitz, the hardcover volume offers classic reprints of the Caped Crusader’s most memorable adventures. Featuring an all-new cover by Jim Lee, several unpublished treasures and a foreword from Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, the celebratory book includes essays looking at Batman from extraordinary perspectives, including Cory Doctorow, Neil Gaiman, Glen David Gold, Denny O’Neil, former San Diego police chief Shelley Zimmerman, and pulp historian Anthony Tollin.
