A new game based on J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” series is coming to PC and consoles over the next two years. Unlike previous adaptations and stories that followed the heroes of Middle Earth, this new game is following Gollum. The studio behind the game is Daedalic Entertainment, and they have partnered up with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.”

The action RPG is set for release in 2021, though details are bare-bones at the moment. If the installment does well, Daedalic Entertainment and Middle-earth Enterprises hope to continue the series, possibly with other characters or timelines.

According to the announcement, the game will remain true to the vision laid out in J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” and will also explore new events and details related to Gollum’s journey. The studio wasn’t clear on which adventures are “new” or being adaptated, so we will have to wait a little longer to see what the studio has planned. We do know that “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum” will be powered by the Unreal Engine and will be localised into multiple languages.

In the books Gollum was originally named Sméagol. He was a Stoor Hobbit that lived near the Gladden Fields, where Isildur lost the ring after being shot with arrows by approaching Orcs. Sméagol tried to remain with his grandmother after finding the ring, but they eventually expelled him from their home. Gollum lived on an island in an underground lake beneath the Misty Mountains for hundreds of years with the ring, eating fish and an occasional goblin or two. Eventually, Gollum dropped the ring near the lake, where it was found by Bilbo Baggins of the Shire.

If you want to take a deep dive into J.R.R Tolkien’s collection, our editor Sarah Fox wrote this Lord of the Rings Guide for the events between ‘The Silmarillion’ and ‘The Return of the King.’

“We are extremely pleased to announce our partnership with multi-award-winning Daedalic Entertainment, to build an innovative, lore-centric game for discerning fans of The Lord of the Rings. With their focus on characters and story, enhanced by rich and evocative artwork, Daedalic is committed to ‘building games for readers who become gamers”, commented Fredrica Drotos, Brand Officer for Middle-earth Enterprises. “We eagerly anticipate the release of Daedalic’s narrative-driven adventure gameplay, which is uniquely matched to the complex, deeply-nuanced world of Middle-earth, created by J.R.R. Tolkien.”

“The Lord of the Rings is one of the most epic and renowned stories of all time – it’s an honour for us to have the opportunity to work on our own contribution to this universe,” said Carsten Fichtelmann, CEO and Co-Founder of Daedalic Entertainment. “In Gollum, players will assume the role of one of the most iconic characters in Middle-earth. We tell Gollum’s story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien.”

“At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realize a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years. Other currently planned media productions based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s work are testament to that.”
