‘Captain Marvel’ Flies to $900M Worldwide
Flying ever closer to the $1B mark, “Captain Marvel” passed $900M at the box office this weekend. The film, now in its third week in theaters, has made over $321M domestically and over $910M worldwide.
Only six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have reached $1B at the box office, and only three of them are character installments. The highest grossing films are the Avengers films, which include “Avengers: Infinity War” which made $2B worldwide; “Marvel’s The Avengers” which made $1.5B worldwide; and “Avengers: Age of Ultron” which grossed $1.4B worldwide. The three highest-grossing character installments are currently “Black Panther” with $1.3B, “Iron Man 3” with $1.2B, and “Captain America: Civil War” with $1.1B. Captain Marvel will join Black Panther as the only two films in the MCU to hit $1B at the box office without being a sequel or a team-up Avengers film.
Many films in the MCU have come close to the $1B milestone. Leading that category is the Sony/Marvel project “Spider-Man: Homecoming” which made $880M worldwide, followed by “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” with $863M; “Thor Ragnarok” with $853M; “Guardians of the Galaxy” with $773M; and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” with $714M.
The third tier cracked the $500M at the box office, those include “Doctor Strange” with $677M; “Big Hero 6” with $657M, “Thor: The Dark World” with $644M; “Ant-Man and the Wasp” with $622M; “Iron Man 2” with $623M; “Iron Man” with $585M; and “Ant-Man” with $519M. “Big Hero 6” isn’t in the traditional MCU, but the Marvel property did make enough to earn a spot on the list.
The film’s to miss the $500M mark worldwide include “Thor” with $449M, “Captain America: The First Avenger” with $370M, and “The Incredible Hulk” with $263M.
“Captain Marvel” should earn enough over the next two or three weeks to earn her spot on the $1B hall of fame, but the list will most likely shift once “Avengers: Endgame” hits theaters nationwide. Joe and Anthony Russo directed “Avengers: Endgame” for Marvel, and the film is expected to top “Avengers: Infinity War’s” $2B run at the box office.
The Weekend Box Office Results are updated every Sunday.
