Gina Rodriguez’s ‘Miss Bala’ Goes Digital in April
Sony Pictures set a digital release date for Gina Rodriguez’s action-thriller “Miss Bala” this week. The film will first release on Digital on April 16th, followed by the Blu-ray and DVD release on April 30th. The new release will give Rodriguez’s fans something to stream during a month that most TV networks are taking a break from their hit shows.
The film features Gina Rodriguez, Ismael Cruz-Córdova (Mary Queen of Scots), Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War), and Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights). Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) directed the film from a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Contrapelo).
The film opened in third-place overall when it hit theaters back in February. “Miss Bala” made $6.8M on opening weekend before grossing over $15M worldwide. “Miss Bala” only opened in 2,203 locations, and hit the box office against “Glass,” “The Upside,” and “Aquaman.”
In the story, Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) drives to Tijuana, Mexico to visit her best friend who is competing in the local “Miss Baja” beauty pageant. During a night out, her friend is abducted and Gloria finds herself being used as a pawn in a dangerous game being played between the CIA, the DEA, and a charismatic yet ruthless cartel kingpin. To save her friend, Gloria plays one organization against the other.
Fans of Rodriguez will get to hear her voice in the upcoming animated-comedy “Scooby.” Rodriguez will be voicing the role of Velma Dinkley in the film, alongside Will Forte as Shaggy, Frank Welker as Scooby-Doo, Eli Ray as Scratch, and Tracy Morgan as Captain Caveman.
