‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Promises a Monster of a Showdown
The newest “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” TV spot teases a lot of explosions and devastation. The studio is ramping up the film’s marketing campaigns for the big May premiere, and the new video tells viewers there must be “One King to Rule Them All.” The joke is a nice touch if you’re also a fan of The Lord of the Rings.
The film is scheduled to hit theaters on May 31, opening against the thriller “Ma” with Octavia Spencer, Juliette Lewis, and Luke Evans, and Dexter Fletcher’s “Rocketman” musical with Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden, and Bryce Dallas Howard. Godzilla’s big competition is the week before, with Disney’s “Aladdin” hitting theaters against Brad Pitt’s sci-fi thriller “Ad Astra” and “Brightburn” starring Elizabeth Banks. Any of those films could split the box office the following week, lowering Godzilla’s opening debut. To make things even harder for the king of lizards, FOX’s “Dark Phoenix” is opening the following weekend against the Mindy Kaling comedy “Late Night.”
The new Godzilla movie is part of the same monster universe as “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island.” In the story, Godzilla fights a wide-array of iconic monsters, as humanity struggles to survive. The film follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and the three-headed King Ghidorah.
The last “Godzilla” film had a $93M opening weekend back in 2014, and the film went on to make over $529M worldwide. “Kong: Skull Island” did even better, starting with a $61M opening weekend before going on to make over $566M worldwide.
Michael Dougherty directed “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” for the studio. The film stars Bradley Whitford, Millie Bobby Brown, and Vera Farmiga.
The next installment to the monster universe will be “Godzilla vs. Kong,” that film was scheduled to premiere on May 22, 2020, but moved to March after “Space Jam 2” took a July spot.
