James Gunn Rehired for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 3’
It looks like James Gunn will return to direct “Guardians of the Galaxy 3.” Multiple outlets are now reporting that Disney has changed course, and will rehire Gunn to direct the long-awaited third installment to the franchise.
According to reports, Gunn met with Alan Horn of Walt Disney Studios and will now helm the new Marvel installment. Gunn was fired in 2018 after offensive tweets were found in his Twitter account from a few years back, the tweets in question made jokes concerning child sex abuse.
James Gunn directed the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014, working from a script that he co-wrote with Nicole Perlman. That film made over $94M on its opening weekend and went on to make over $774M worldwide. Gunn returned to write and direct “Guardians of the Galaxy VOl. 2” in 2017 for Disney. The sequel made over $146.5M on its opening weekend before grossing over $863.7M worldwide.
While Gunn was fired from the project by Disney, a replacement was never name by the studio. It was also believed that Gunn’s script would still be used in the third installment.
The ragtag crew of guardians includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel (Voice), Bradley Cooper (Voice), Karen Gillan, and Elizabeth Debicki. The sequel also featured Kurt Russell and Sylvester Stallone in smaller roles.
The next major Marvel installment to hit theaters is “Avengers: Endgame,” set to releases on April 26th. The previous installment, “Avengers: Infinity War,” currently holds the top opening box office spot in April with $257.6M, so that’s the number Marvel is hoping to beat next month.
“Avengers: Endgame” will include the “Guardians of the Galaxy” crew, along with the other heroes that have been added over the years. The cast includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Karen Gillan, Paul Rudd, Josh Brolin, Brie Larson, Bradley Cooper (Voice), Elizabeth Olsen, Evangeline Lilly, Letitia Wright, Chadwick Boseman, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Disney has not made an official announcement at this time.
