Sony Pictures is already teasing the upcoming “Jumanji” sequel, currently scheduled to hit theaters this winter. The studio shared a first-look photo of the returning cast on social media with followers, teasing Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart posing as their characters.
The film will be the big follow-up to Sony Pictures‘ “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which earned the title of Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing film. “Jumanji: WTTJ” opened with a $36M debut in 2017 and went on to make over $962M worldwide. The split was almost even across domestic and foreign markets, with the film bringing in $404M domestically and $557M overseas. Taking the top spot on Sony Pictures’ box office charts is an impressive achievement, considering that the studio is also home to the “Spider-Man” and “Hotel Transylvania” franchises.
The Jumanji sequel is currently scheduled to release in December of this year, going up against an untitled Blumhouse project releasing on the same weekend. The other heavy-hitters opening in December include the “Cats” musical, “Star Wars: Episode IX,” Sony’s own “Masters of the Universe” reboot,” “The Call of the Wild,” “Little Women,” and Melissa McCarthy’s “Superintelligence” at the end of the month.
Nick Jonas is expected to join the returning cast for the next Jumanji film, but he wasn’t present in the photo above. Other cast members that are expected to return are Ser’Darius Blain, Alex Wolff, Maison Iseman, and Morgan Turner; they are returning as the teens. Sony Pictures hasn’t confirmed that Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, and Dania Ramirez have joined the project, but there have been rumors that they will be featured in the film.
On social media, Dwayne Johnson posted the photo with the caption, “Yes, (your) favorite band is back ~ lookin’ lean (ish) and mean. Even though things may not be as they seem – So buckle up world because soon we’ll all play – When a brand NEW JUMANJI drops this Holiday!” Johnson added, “Oh the fun you’re gonna have. Love, The Smoldering Dr. Bravestone.”
