Mindy Kaling’s ‘Late Night’ Gets a Trailer and Release Date
Mindy Kaling’s “Late Night” made headlines at Sundance this year when Amazon picked up the film for a cool $13M, setting a new record for the film festival. Amazon Studios is distributing the film, and now there is an official trailer to watch. The comedy-drama will hit theaters on June 7th; it will then most likely be available on Prime Video shortly after.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra, “Late Night” was written, produced, and stars, Mindy Kaling. The film also features Emma Thompson, Max Casella, Hugh Dancy, John Lithgow, Denis O’Hare, Reid Scott, and Amy Ryan.
In the story, Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson) is a pioneer and legendary host on the late-night talk-show circuit. When she’s accused of being a “woman who hates women,” she puts affirmative action on the to-do list and hires Molly (Mindy Kaling) to get a female writer in an all-male writers’ room. During this time, Newbury’s network is looking to replace her, and Molly has to prove that she’s not simply a diversity hire. Molly has to help Newbury revive her show’s low ratings, and possibly make some bigger changes at the network overall.
The studio describes the film adding “Late Night takes on white privilege, entitlement, and a culture veering toward crassness and conservatism.” The studio added, “Challenging the limitations placed on women in power; the film delivers a sophisticated comedy that champions a new order centering the strengths of women and diverse voices.”
If you want to set a reminder to catch “Late Night” in theaters, Amazon Studios will release “Late Night” nationwide on June 7th. The release date puts “Late Night” against the new “Dark Phoenix” release from FOX, and the animated-comedy “The Secret Life of Pets 2” from Universal Pictures. The following weekend is also crowded, with “Men in Black International,” and “Shaft” hitting theaters nationwide.
