Disney released another preview of “The Lion King” live-action adaptation during the Oscars tonight. The film is scheduled to hit theaters later this summer, and it features an all-star cast of fan-favorite actors. The official launch date for “The Lion King” is July 19, 2019. Jon Favreau directed the film, which follows Simba on his journey to be king.
“The Lion King” will be a live-action and CG hybrid adaptation of the original 1994 animated-feature. The cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.
Disney described the story adding “Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival.” The studio continued, “Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.”

The first video released by the studio was shown on TV during an NFL game on Thanksgiving. In a 24-hour period the video reached over 224M views globally. Disney then topped the animated-feature record in one-day video views with the first teaser trailer for “Frozen 2.”
