Comic adaptations are all the rage right now, and Netflix has boarded a new series based on “The Old Guard.” Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, Beyond The Lights) will direct the film, which is based on the comic book series created by author Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernández. Rucka is writing the screenplay for the adaptation, with Stan Wlodkowski serving as Executive Producer.
Two of the cast members have already been announced; Netflix has already confirmed that Charlize Theron (Tully, Atomic Blonde) and KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk, Native Son) will be part of the adaptation.
“The Old Guard” tells the story of a small covert group of immortal mercenaries who must fight to keep their team together when they discover the existence of a new immortal and their extraordinary abilities are exposed.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger for Skydance are producing the project, along with Charlize Theron, Beth Kono and AJ Dix for Denver and Delilah; and Marc Evans.
Netflix hasn’t set a premiere window for the new series yet, so fans will have to wait a few more weeks. We will also get more information on the cast as the film starts production.
If you are a fan of comics, you should check out “The Umbrella Academy” if you haven’t binged through the first season yet. That series is based on the award-winning comic book series of the same name created and written by Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics.
“The Umbrella Academy” is a live-action series that follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes – Luther, Diego, Allison, Vanya, Klaus and Number Five – as they work together to solve their adoptive father Reginald Hargreeves’ mysterious death, while coming apart at the seams due to their divergent personalities and abilities.
