“The Angry Birds Movie 2” is expected to debut in August, which still has a lot of open slots in the schedule. “Boss Level” with Frank Grillo, Naomi Watts, and Mel Gibson will start the month, opening against the comedy “Good Boys” with Jacob Tremblay and the crime drama “The Informer” with Joel Kinnaman, Rosamund Pike, Clive Owen, Common, and Ana de Armas.
Gerard Butler’s next film, “Angel has Fallen,” is opening the following weekend, the film stars Morgan Freeman, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Lance Reddick, Nick Nolte, Danny Huston, Piper Perabo, and Tim Blake Nelson.
August can be a finicky month at the box office. Traditionally, August is one of the worst performing months of the year, but the success of “Guardians of the Galaxy” in 2014 showed studios that films have a chance of breaking through the summer lull. The August schedule will fill up as we get closer to summer, but “The Angry Birds Movie 2” could be the family film to beat this year.
