‘After’ Trailer Hopes to Rekindle the YA Drama Genre
Perfect lighting, meets ultimate drama
There was a time that YA romance-dramas flooded the box office; it was long before superheroes and franchise reboots took over cinemas across the country. Moviegoers would flock to the theaters to see films like “Cruel Intentions,” “Fear,” and “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” and “After” is filling in the gap. The studio released a second trailer for the film this week, giving fans a quick preview of the movie before it hits theaters this April.
The film has a mix of seasoned romantic-drama actors and a few new faces. The cast includes Josephine Langford, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Peter Gallagher, Jennifer Beals, and Selma Blair. It’s scene after scene of perfect lighting and high-stakes romance, which is what fans have come to expect.
The studio described the film stating “After follows Tessa, a dedicated student, dutiful daughter and loyal girlfriend to her high school sweetheart, as she enters her first semester in college. Armed with grand ambitions for her future, her guarded world opens up when she meets the dark and mysterious Hardin Scott, a magnetic, brooding rebel who makes her question all she thought she knew about herself and what she wants out of life.”
“After” is expected to hit theaters on April 12th, which puts it against some big competition at the box office. That is the follow-up weekend for the “Pet Sematary” reboot and the new DC “Shazam!” film. “After” is opening against the “Hellboy” reboot and the animated-comedy “Missing Link.” It will be interesting to see where “After” falls on the box office charts that weekend, but we are hoping that the genre makes a comeback. The following week won’t be any easier for the film, with Warner Bros. Pictures’ “The Curse of La Llorona” hitting theaters nationwide.
