Netflix’s holiday originals have grown quite a following over the past few years. The subscription service has put out hits like “The Christmas Prince” and “The Princess Switch,” along with “The Christmas Chronicles” with Kurt Russel, and “The Holiday Calendar” to keep viewers streaming over the holiday seasons. One of the 2019 holiday tales coming to viewers this year is “Merry Happy Whatever,” which will star Dennis Quaid as Don Quinn. Netflix describes the character as a “strong-willed patriarch who must balance the demands of his complicated family with the stress of the Christmas season.” According to the announcement, this test comes when his youngest daughter comes home for the holidays with a new boyfriend.
The first season of the show takes place over the week or so around Christmas. Future seasons of “Merry Happy Whatever” might explore other holidays if the show does well. Dennis Quaid will star as Don and serve as an executive producer on the project. Netflix already ordered eight episodes of the series, with Tucker Cawley serving as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
Pamela Fryman (One Day at a Time, How I Met Your Mother) directed the series for Netflix.
It’s interesting to see a possible on-going family series entering into the mix of holiday releases on Netflix. The previous releases, like “The Christmas Prince” and “The Princess Switch,” have mostly been holiday-themed rom-com movies, so it’s nice to see Netflix changing things up.
The overprotected father storyline can sometimes come off as creepy. We hope that Dennis Quaid’s on-screen charm is more akin to Steve Martin’s in “Father of the Bride.” Netflix stopped short of announcing a release date at this time, and we will have to wait on other casting announcements.
Quaid will next be seen starring in Sony’s movie “The Intruder” which is set to hit theaters on May 3rd, as well as in Universal’s “A Dog’s Journey” on May 17th. Quaid will also be starring in the third season of Amazon’s “Goliath” starring opposite Billy Bob Thornton which will premiere later in 2019.
