Warner Bros. Pictures is ready to scare you this April with “The Curse of La Llorona.” The film stars Linda Cardellini (Bloodline, Avengers: Age of Ultron); Raymond Cruz (Major Crimes); Patricia Velasquez (The L Word, The Mummy films); and Marisol Ramirez (NCIS: Los Angeles).
The cast also includes Sean Patrick Thomas (Barbershop films, Halloween: Resurrection), Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen (Selfless) and newcomer Roman Christou. The studio will release the horror-thriller on April 19, 2019.
In the legend, the weeping woman is an apparition caught between worlds. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the river after them as she cried. In the film, anyone that hears the weeping woman is doomed.
The studio teased “La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious … and her methods more terrifying.”
The story takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, and La Llorona is haunting the children. Ignoring the warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.
Emile Gladstone, Gary Dauberman (“IT” and “Annabelle” franchises) and James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe) produced the film, which was directed by Michael Chaves. Fans of the genre can watch the official trailer below thanks to an upload from Warner Bros. Pictures.
“The Curse of La Llorona’ isn’t the only big thriller releasing in April. The reboot of “Pet Sematary” is releasing earlier in the month, followed by A24’s “High Life’ sci-fi thriller with Robert Pattinson. The crime-thriller “Under the Silver Lake” is also expected to debut in a limited number of theaters in April.
