Orion Pictures dropped the first official trailer for the “Child’s Play” reboot this morning. The horror-thriller is coming to theaters this summer and stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman, and Brian Tyree Henry.
Lars Klevberg directed the reboot, which will officially launch on June 21, 2019. The film will be a contemporary re-imagining of the 1988 horror classic, updated with a new cast and better effects.
The story of “Child’s Play” follows Karen (Aubrey Plaza), a single mother who gifts her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi doll, unaware of its more sinister nature. Tyler Burton Smith wrote the screenplay and fans of the original franchise can watch the official trailer below.
June will be a busy month at the box office this year, with FOX’s “Dark Phoenix” and “The Secret Life of Pets 2” starting the month. The following week offers two premieres, Sony Pictures’ “Men in Black: International” and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Shaft.” “Child’s Play” is releasing against “Toy Story 4” the following week, with “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” hitting theaters one week after.
The original “Child’s Play” movie opened against “Ernest Saves Christmas” and “Iron Eagle III,” taking the top spot with a $6.5M weekend. The horror classic went on to make over $33M domestically and over $44M worldwide. A sequel, “Child’s Play 2,” opened in 1990 and made $35M worldwide in theaters. The third installment was “Child’s Play 3,” and that film was released in 1991 and made over $20M. Other installments, like “Bride of Chucky” were also made, that film was directed by Ronny Yu and featured Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, and Katherine Heigl.
The “Child’s Play” trailer wasn’t the only reboot to drop a video this week, “Pet Semetary” also released an official trailer, and that film hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
