Rosario Dawson is joining the all-star cast in “Zombieland 2.” Dawson will join the original cast members that were already confirmed; those include Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin. There are rumors that Zoey Deutch will also be joining the film, but there haven’t been any confirmations at this time.

It has been an excellent year for Dawson, who recently saw her character Claire Temple jump between the Marvel series “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Daredevil,” “Iron Fist,” and “The Defenders.” Just this week we reported that USA Network has picked up a new anthology series called “Briarpatch,” which will also star Rosario Dawson. That show will follow Allegra Dill (Dawson), a dogged investigator returning to her Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees. The first season will also star Jay R. Ferguson (“Mad Men,” “The Romanoffs”), Brian Geraghty (“Chicago P.D.,” “Ray Donovan”) and Edi Gathegi (“StartUp”).

The director of “Zombieland,” Ruben Fleischer, is also returning for the second installment. Fleischer recently directed Sony Pictures’ mega-hit “Venom,” which brought in over $211M domestically and over $855M worldwide. Fleischer will be working off a script written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the same team that wrote the original back in 2009, and who worked together on the FOX movies “Deadpool” and “Deadpool 2.”

The original film was a big hit for Sony Pictures and the film hit theaters in October 2009. “Zombieland” opened at number-one at the domestic box office with a $24.7M weekend, going on to make over $102M worldwide off an estimated $23M budget.

The sequel will officially start production this week, and just like the original, will release in October. The studio seems to be shooting for the 10th-anniversary date for the release of the film, which could be part of the story if the events take place ten years after the original zombie hunt.
