‘A Dog’s Journey’ Fetches a new Trailer
A follow up to the 2017 hit "A Dog's Purpouse"
The upcoming family drama “A Dog’s Journey” released a new trailer this morning. The film, which stars Dennis Quaid, Betty Gilpin, and Josh Gad, is scheduled to hit theaters on May 17th. That release date has the film hitting theaters one-week before Disney’s “Aladdin” live-action adaptation opens nationwide, which could hurt the film’s follow-up week in theaters. On the bright side, “A Dog’s Journey” is opening against “John Wick 3” and “The Sun is Also a Star,” so it does give families something to see while other demographics shop elsewhere.
The new video isn’t the first trailer that Universal Pictures has released for the film, but it does introduce the furry friends that audiences will meet later this year. The story is a sequel to the film “A Dog’s Purpose,” and follows Bailey the dog as he finds his new destiny and forms an unbreakable bond that will lead him, and the people he loves, to places they never imagined.
The original installment to the franchise was released in 2017 and made over $18.2M on its opening weekend. The family drama went on to make over $64.5M domestically and over $205M worldwide, a massive hit for the studio considering that the first film was made on a budget of $22M. The sudden success of the first film quickly put the sequel into production, and Universal Pictures is hoping to capture the same overseas markets.
It will be interesting to see how the sequel does in theaters with a May release date. The original opened in January, a month that typically has the fewest new releases in theaters, while May is often overstuffed. As we mentioned earlier, Disney’s “Aladdin” and “John Wick 3” are opening that month, but so are Brad Pitt’s “Ad Astra;” the adult-comedy “Booksmart with Jason Sudeikis, Lisa Kudrow, and Will Forte; the horror-thriller “Brightburn” with Elizabeth Banks; the “Minecraft” adaptation; “Godzilla: King of Monsters;” the musical “Rocketman” with Taron Egerton; and an untitled Blumhouse production.
The film’s are based on the books by W. Bruce Cameron, you can find his collection of works right here on Amazon.
Directed by Gail Mancuso (TV’s Modern Family), A Dog’s Journey is once again produced by Gavin Polone (A Dog’s Purpose, Zombieland). Mancuso directs from an adapted screenplay by Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Wally Wolodarsky & Maya Forbes, based on the book by Cameron. The film from Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
