Taylor Swift has started teasing her upcoming role in the musical adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s beloved smash musical “Cats.” Swift posted a picture of herself on Instagram earlier today, standing next to a sign that read ‘Bombalurina.’ That is the name of her character in the upcoming film and is one of three Gumbie cats in the story.
Swift joins Idris Elba, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Robert Fairchild, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in the production.
As for the film itself, Universal Pictures plans to release the adaptation on December 20th. That gives you almost a year to listen to all of the songs again, from “The Naming of Cats” to “Memory,” a few thousand times.
Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, Les Misérables, The Danish Girl) is directing the musical, which is based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot and the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Steven Spielberg, Lloyd Webber, and Angela Morrison are serving as Executive Producers on the project.
“Cats” still stands as one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. “Cats” received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, it then played for 21 record-breaking years and featured almost 9,000 performances. The production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and ran for 18 years.
Fans of the “Cats” musical will have to wait a few more weeks before the studio releases a trailer. Universal Pictures is also working on an adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” but that was pushed back to make way for “Cats.” Stephen Daldry will direct the “Wicked” project, but we haven’t heard any casting announcements on the film at this time.
