Netflix Will Adapt ‘American Son’ With Kerry Washington
The new adaptation is starting production next month
Netflix announced plans to launch “American Son,” based on the 2018 play from playwright Christopher Demos-Brown. The story centers on interracial parents who reunite in a Florida police station while searching for answers about their missing teenage son.
The award-winning cast includes Kerry Washington, Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan, and Eugene Lee. All of the actors will reprise their roles in the Netflix production. Tony Award winner Kenny Leon returns to direct and produce, with Jeffrey Richards and Rebecca Gold serving as producers. Washington and her EVP Development and Production Pilar Savone will also produce under Washington’s banner Simpson Street.
“American Son powerfully explores themes of family, love and identity,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content. “We are honored to work with Kerry Washington, Kenny Leon, Christopher Demos-Brown and the entire cast to bring this story from the Broadway stage to our members around the world.”
Netflix did not confirm a release date at this time, but production on the project will begin in New York City this February.
This week Netflix also released the first trailer for “This is Us,” the company’s next french original Netflix film. The film follows a real time love story in a city ready to explode.
The film follows Anna, a young Parisian in her twenties. After escaping a close death in a plane crash, Anna reminisces events from her life. In the streets of Paris, she is caught between dream and reality, present and past. The film was directed by Elisabeth Vogler, and produced by Laurent Rochette (21 Juin Cinema), Olivier Capelli (Les Idiots) and Aurélien Wintermann (French Lab Agency). The film stars Noémie Schmidt, Grégoire Isvarine, Marie Mottet and Lou Castel.
If you are in the mood for an interesting foreign film night, that project will release on Netflix on February 22th , 2019.
