It’s cold and snowy outside in most of the country, but that didn’t stop this week’s new releases from hitting the box office. The major releases this weekend are the family film “A Dog’s Way Home,” the sci-fi thriller “Replicas,” and the dramatic-comedy “The Upside.” These films will have to battle “Glass” next week, a film that may shatter on landing.
The big winner this week was “The Upside” which opened across 3,080 locations and made over $19.5M domestically. “The Upside” was directed by Neil Burger; the film stars Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman.
“Aquaman” dropped to second-place overall on the domestic charts with a $17.2M weekend. The king of Atlantis has made over $287M domestically since it hit theaters four weeks ago and has made over $1B globally. “Aquaman” was directed by James Wan, the film stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and Willem Dafoe.
Sony Pictures’ “A Dog’s Way Home ” debuted in third-place on the box office charts this week after bringing in $11.3M weekend. “A Dog’s Way Home” was directed by Charles Martin Smith, and the film features the voice talents of Ashley Judd and Edward James Olmos.
Sony Pictures also took fourth-place overall thanks to “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” which made $9M this weekend. The animated hit, now in its fifth week in theaters, has made over $147.7M domestically for the studio. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey, the film features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld.
Fifth-place went to another film from Sony Pictures, the horror-thriller “Escape Room.” The film’s follow-up weekend in theaters made $8.9M, raising the film’s domestic total to just over $32M. “Escape Room” was directed by Adam Robitel, the film features Deborah Ann Woll and Tyler Labine.
Not making the top five but worth mentioning is this week’s other new release, the sci-fi thriller “Replicas.” The film made $2.5M across 2,329 locations this weekend and ended up in twelfth-place overall on the domestic charts. “Replicas” was directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, the film stars Keanu Reeves, Alice Eve, and Emily Alyn Lind.
As we mentioned earlier, next week’s big release will be M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” with Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Sarah Paulson. Initially, fans seemed very excited to see the third installment of the franchise, but critics may have quieted the buzz that the film had generated over the last few weeks. When this article was written, the film stood with a 37% on RottenTomatoes, and most critics have not been kind to the film.
