Sony Pictures was the only major studio to release a new movie this weekend. The studio released the horror-thriller “Escape Room” in theaters across the country, while other studios skipped the predictably slow week at the box office. The new thriller had to battle last year’s holiday favorites, coming up a little short against the King of Atlantis.
In its third week at number-one, “Aquaman” topped the charts this weekend with $30M. The film, now the highest grossing DCEU installment in worldwide ticket sales, has made over $259M domestically. The new DC installment is very close to hitting the $1B mark, solidifying Aquaman as the DC character to beat. “Aquaman” was directed by James Wan, the film stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and Willem Dafoe.
Sony Pictures’ “Escape Room” was a distant second this weekend but the film did gross an estimated $18M across 2,717 locations. “Escape Room” was directed by Adam Robitel, the film features Deborah Ann Woll and Tyler Labine.
Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” dropped to third-place on the domestic charts this week but the holiday hit did make another $15.7M. The film, now in its third week in theater, has made over $138M domestically for Walt Disney Pictures. “Mary Poppins Returns” was directed by Rob Marshall, the film stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury.
Sony Pictures also took the fourth-place spot, thanks to “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” bringing in $13M this weekend. The film has been in theaters for four weeks now and has made over $133M domestically. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey, the film features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld.
“Bumblebee” remained on the Top Five this week after bringing in another $12.7M across 3,597 locations. The Transformers spinoff has now made over $97M domestically in just three weeks. “Bumblebee” was directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
Next weekend there will be a little more variety at the box office. Families will have “A Dog’s Way Home” with Ashley Judd and Edward James Olmos, while other moviegoers can choose between “Replicas” with Keanu Reeves or “The Upside” with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. If you plan on hitting the movies this month, these are the January Movie Releases.
