There’s a new “Happy Death Day 2U” trailer to watch this week, thanks to a New Year’s Day upload from Universal Pictures. The sequel is scheduled to hit theaters this February, but you can get an early preview of the thriller thanks to the video below.
The film will be a follow-up to the original 2017 film “Happy Death Day,” which brought in over $26M over its opening weekend. The first installment opened at number-one on the domestic charts before going on to make over $122M worldwide. With an estimated budget of $4.8M, the original title in the franchise was a runaway hit for Universal Pictures. The sequel is scheduled to open in theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend and will be hoping to top the first film’s $26M debut.
Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are reprising their roles for the sequel, under the returning director, Christopher Landon.
Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, The Purge) produced the original thriller, which centered on co-ed Tree (Jessica Rothe) who is doomed to relive the day of her murder unless she can identify her masked assailant.
The release date puts “Happy Death Day 2U” with some serious competition at the box office. The film “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” is releasing the same day, along with the comedy “Isn’t it Romantic” with Rebel Wilson and Priyanka Chopra. Other thrillers opening that month include a remake of “Jacob’s Ladder” with Michael Ealy; “The Prodigy” with Taylor Schilling; a Universal Pictures’ project called “The Turning;” and “Rhythm Section” with Blake Lively and Jude Law.
We will just have to wait until late February to see which of the thrillers takes the top spot on the box office charts.
Universal Pictures will release “Happy Death 2U” on February 14th.
