Weekend Box Office: ‘Holmes and Watson’ and ‘Vice’ Stumble at the Gate
Cracked the case, but not the top three
The 2018 box office is coming to a close this week and its going out with a whimper. In new releases, moviegoers could choose between the buddy comedy “Holmes & Watson” or the Dick Cheney bio-drama “Vice”. Both of the new films opened in over 2,400 locations this weekend, but failed to top any of the earlier releases.
Even with the two new releases this week, “Aquaman” remained at number-one on the domestic charts with a $51.5M weekend. The film remained in 4,125 locations this week and has a two-week domestic total of $188M. “Aquaman” was directed by James Wan, the film stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and Willem Dafoe.
Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns” remained at number-two, bringing in $28M this weekend across 4,090 locations. The new Disney release has made $98.9M in just two-weeks domestically. “Mary Poppins Returns” was directed by Rob Marshall, the film stars Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Emily Mortimer, Ben Whishaw, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury.
Paramount Pictures “Bumblebee” also retained its position in third-place overall on the domestic charts. The new Transformers installment made $20.5M this weekend, upping the film’s two-week total to just over $66.7M. “Bumblebee” was directed by Travis Knight, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena.
Sony Pictures took fourth-place with “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” the film made $18.3M across 3,813 locations. Now in its third-week in theaters, the animated hit has made over $103M for the studio. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey, the film features the voice talents of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, and Hailee Steinfeld.
“The Mule,” also from Warner Bros. Pictures, made $11.7M this weekend to take fifth-place on the domestic charts. The film remained in 2,787 locations this week and has made over $60.7M domestically since it hit theaters three-weeks ago. “The Mule” was directed by Clint Eastwood; the film stars Clint Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, and Michael Peña.
Not making the top five but worth mentioning are both of this week’s new releases. “Vice” landed in sixth-place on the domestic charts this week, bringing in $7.7M across 2,442 locations. The buddy comedy “Holmes and Watson” only made $7.3M across 2,776 locations. “Holmes & Watson” was directed by Etan Cohen, the film stars Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, and Ralph Fiennes. “Vice” was written and directed by Adam McKay, the film stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Tyler Perry, Bill Pullman, and Alison Pill.
Next week is one of the slowest weeks of the year at the box office. Thriller fans will have “Escape Room” with Deborah Ann Woll and Tyler Labine to watch, but most moviegoers will have to settle for a previous release.
