Netflix released a first look trailer for “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” this morning, giving thriller fans a short preview of the latest installment in the popular anthology series. Unlike the previous episodic versions of the series, this new project will be a feature-length special, diving into the mythological world of the Bandersnatch through the world of video game adaptations.
The details on the story are slim for now, but we do know that the story will take place in 1984. The video shows a young video game programmer, working to turn the story of the Bandersnatch into a video game. The titular Bandersnatch character was part of Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking-Glass,” the follow-up story to “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”
The new Black Mirror installment will feature Fionn Whitehead, Will Poulter, and Asim Chaudhry. Fans of the genre can watch the official trailer for the new release below, thanks to an early morning upload from Netflix.
There were rumors that Netflix would release a ‘choose-your-own-adventure’ version of Black Mirror, but it’s unclear if this new release will follow that format. There are plenty of teasers found within the video to suggest that this story could fit that mold, but we will have to wait for tomorrow’s release to find out.
The official trailer description reads, “In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge. Welcome back.”
“Black Mirror” quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular sci-fi original series. The surprise release should be a welcome change for thriller fans, who haven’t seen too many new releases in the genre since the beginning of the holidays.
