Shay Mitchell is back in theaters this week with the horror-thriller “The Possession of Hannah Grace”. The film gives thriller fans a chance to skip the regular holiday-themed content being offered in theaters, and the studio hopped to top the former November favorites. That didn’t happen this week, and the new horror-thriller failed to get into the top five releases on the weekend box office charts.
In its follow up weekend “Ralph Breaks the Internet” made $25.7M across 4,017 locations, that brings the film’s two-week domestic total to just over $119M. “Ralph Breaks the Internet” was directed by Phil Johnston and Rich Moore and features the voice talents of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, and Gal Gadot.
“Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch” took second-place overall on the domestic charts, bringing in $17.7M across 3,934 locations. Now in its fourth-week in theaters, the animated-comedy has made over $203M for Universal Pictures. “The Grinch” was directed by Yarrow Cheney and Scott Mosier, the film features the voice talents of Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Seely, and Rashida Jones.
Also in its follow up week is “Creed II,” which made $16.8M across 3,576 locations, raising the film’s total to just over $81M domestically. “Creed II” was directed by Steven Caple Jr., the film stars Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and Tessa Thompson.
“Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” landed in fourth-place overall with an $11M weekend, raising the film’s three-week total to $134M. “Fantastic Beasts 2” was directed by David Yates, the film features Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, Zoe Kravitz, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, and Johnny Depp.
FOX’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” managed to stay in the top five this week with an $8M weekend, raising the film’s five-week total to just over $164M. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was directed by Bryan Singer, the film stars Rami Malek, Aidan Gillen, Mike Myers, and Tom Hollander.
Not making the top five but worth mentioning is “The Possession of Hannah Grace,” this week’s big new release. “The Possession of Hannah Grace” only made $6.5M on its opening weekend, across 2,065 locations. “The Possession of Hannah Grace” was directed by Diederik Van Rooijen, the film stars Shay Mitchell, Grey Damon, and Kirby Johnson.
Mitchell’s former “Pretty Little Liars” star, Lucy Hale, also had a horror-thriller release in theaters this year, the film “Truth or Dare” opened in April with an $18M debut before going on to make over $94M worldwide.
Several specialty box office releases will hit select theaters next week. If you’re all caught up with the national releases you can look for Peter Hedges’ “Ben is Back” with Julia Roberts, and Focus Features’ “Mary Queen of Scots” with Margot Robbie, David Tennant, and Saoirse Ronan. NY and L.A. residents can also look for “VOX LUX” with Natalie Portman.
