Universal Pictures released the first “Happy Death Day 2U” trailer, offering a quick preview of the follow-up horror thriller scheduled to release in theaters this winter.

The original filmed brought in over $26M on opening weekend, opening at number-one before going on to make over $122M worldwide. The original hit theaters with an estimated $4.8M budget, and the wild success of the original had Universal Pictures eager to release “Happy Death Day 2U”. The film is opening on Valentine’s Day weekend in 2019.

Jessica Rothe and Israel Broussard are reprising their roles for the sequel, under the returning director, Christopher Landon. The original screenplay was written by Scott Lobdell but Landon will be working off his own screenplay in the second installment.

Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, The Purge) produced the original thriller, which centered on co-ed Tree (Jessica Rothe) who is doomed to relive the day of her murder unless she can identify her masked assailant. If she can’t, she will be stuck in an insane loop, reliving a ghoulish nightmare that has become her death day.

If you were a fan of the original, you can watch the first official trailer below.

The release date puts “Happy Death Day 2U” with some serious competition, the film “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” is releasing that day, as is “Isn’t it Romantic” with Rebel Wilson and Priyanka Chopra. Other thrillers opening that month include “Escape Room” with Deborah Ann Woll and Tyler Labine; a remake of “Jacob’s Ladder” with Michael Ealy; “The Prodigy” with Taylor Schilling; a Universal Pictures’ project called “The Turning;” and “Rhythm Section” with Blake Lively and Jude Law.

We will just have to wait until late February to see which of the thrillers takes the top-spot on the box office charts.

Universal Pictures will release “Happy Death 2U” on February 14th.
