Gear up space cowboys, a new version of “Cowboy Bebop” is coming to Netflix. The jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed is being re-imagined and launching on Netflix as a new series.

The show follows a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. Netflix has already ordered 10 episodes for the show’s first season, which doesn’t have a cast or a release date at this time. The series is from Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios, with Netflix handling the physical production of the series.

Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg of Midnight Radio will serve as Showrunners and Executive Producers on the series, with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios (Snowpiercer, Good Behavior); Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki, and Shin Sasaki of Sunrise Inc; and Tetsu Fujimura and Matthew Weinberg serving as Executive Producers.

Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok) will write the first episode with Shinichiro Watanabe (director of the original anime) serving as a consultant on the show.

Unlike the original anime version of the series, this new series will be live-action. We don’t have a release date at this time, and we will have to wait for Netflix to start teasing the new series to get a glimpse of the art-direction. We will also be anxiously awaiting the cast-list. Spike Spiegel and Faye Valentine are crowd favorites from the series, so it will be interesting to see who Netflix casts in those roles for the live-action adaptation.

The new series was announced one-day after Netflix confirmed that new animated series are being developed from the Roald Dahl universe of stories. Netflix is going to create original animated event series, based on the books from the acclaimed and award-winning author’s best-selling library, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits, and many other beloved titles.
