Disney released the first “The Lion King” teaser today, the video previews the upcoming live-action adaptation of the original 1994 animated-feature. The video was released during an NFL game on Thanksgiving and shows off Disney’s amazing CGI. The film will star an all-star cast and will hit theaters in 2019.
Jon Favreau directed the new “The Lion King,” which stars Beyonce as Nala; Keegan-Michael Key as the hyena Kamari; Donald Glover as Simba; and James Earl Jones once again taking on the role of Mufasa. Other roles include Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar; and Alfre Woodard as Simba’s mother Sarabi. HBO’s John Oliver will be voicing the know-it-all bird Zazu, and John Kani will be the wise Rafiki. Florence Kasumba will be playing Shenzi, while Eric André will be playing Azizi.
Comedians Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will be voicing Timon and Pumbaa in the project. As for young Simba, that will be JD McCrary, while young Nala will be played by Shahadi Wright Joseph. Fans of the story can watch the teaser below.
Favreau also directed the Disney live-action/CGI film “The Jungle Book” back in 2016, which was a huge hit for the studio. That CGI project made over $103M on opening weekend and went on to make over $364M domestically before making over $966M worldwide. The previous live-action adaptation was “Beauty and the Beast” with Emma Watson and Luke Evans in 2017, that film made over $1.2B worldwide.
Disney is still working on “Dumbo,” “Aladdin,” “Lady and the Tramp,” and “Mulan”. There have been rumors that Emma Stone will star in a live-action version of “Cruella,” focusing on the life of “101 Dalmations” star Cruella de Vil, but Disney has been quiet about that project. It wouldn’t be the first villain to get a story, Angelina Jolie brought “Maleficent” to theaters in 2014 and is reprising the role for the 2019 follow-up “Maleficent 2”.
“The Lion King” is set to hit theaters on July 19, 2019.
