Now that “VENOM” has sparked renewed interest in Sony’s Spider-Man’s spinoffs, the studio is gearing up to release two more Marvel films in 2020. Sony Pictures has staked out two dates for untitled Sony/Marvel projects, one on July 10, 2020, and another on October 2, 2020. Sony’s placeholders indicate that the July film will be a new spinoff entirely, while the October release will be a sequel to an existing franchise.

Since Sony Pictures is already putting together a “Morbius” film, with Oscar-winner Jared Leto taking the titular role, that is probably the first project slated for July. Daniel Espinosa will be directing that film, which is based on the popular Marvel vampire.

As for the second project, the safest bet is that Sony is scheduling the big “VENOM” sequel to release in October. The original “VENOM” released this past October and crushed the box office with an $80M opening before going on to make over $780M worldwide. The first installment was directed by Ruben Fleischer and featured Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate, and Riz Ahmed.

While fans might be new to the Morbius character, he’s been around a long time. The character was created by Gil Kane and Roy Thomas, and first made an appearance in “The Amazing Spider-Man” back in 1971. Named Michael Morbius, the character was a Nobel Prize-winning biochemist who later became a sort of vampire while attempting to cure a blood disease. He’s not an actual vampire, comparing him to other versions of vampires from popular books and films of our generation, but he’s pretty close.

We will just have to wait and see if Sony Pictures has any surprises in story for us, but it’s a pretty safe bet that these are the two films that you will be getting in 2020. Until then, we will have to wait for the inevitable teasers and trailers to confirm the new projects.
