Sophia Lillis to Star in ‘Gretel and Hansel’ Thriller
Lillis picks up another horror thrillere
Orion Pictures has started production on a new horror-thriller that will re-imagine the classic story of Hansel and Gretel, though this one is called “Gretel and Hansel”. Filming is underway in Dublin and the start of production was announced today by John Hegeman, President, Orion Pictures.
The film will star Sophia Lillis (It, HBO’s Sharp Objects) as Gretel, Sammy Leakey as Hansel, Charles Babalola (Mary Magdalene, Netflix’s Black Mirror) as The Hunter, and Alice Krige (Star Trek: First Contact, Sleepwalkers) and Jessica De Gouw (NBC’s Dracula, CW’s Arrow) as the witches. Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House) directs from a screenplay he wrote with Rob Hayes (Netflix’s Chewing Gum).
The studio teases the story in today’s announcement adding, “A long time ago in a distant fairytale countryside, a young girl leads her little brother into a dark wood in desperate search of food and work, only to stumble upon a nexus of terrifying evil.”
Automatik Entertainment’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Sinister, Upgrade) and Fred Berger (La La Land, Autopsy of Jane Doe) will produce the film with Sandra Yee Ling serving as executive producer. Dan Kagan will oversee the project on behalf of Orion Pictures.
Collaborating with Perkins is a creative team led by Director of Photography Galo Olivares (Netflix’s Roma), production designer Jeremy Reed (My Dinner with Hervé, Factory Girl), costume designer Leonie Prendergast (Becoming Jane, Reign of Fire), special effects supervisor Paul Byrne (HISTORY’s Vikings, Doomsday), editor Josh Ethier (Bullet Head, Leatherface) and makeup and hair team Liz Byrne (King Arthur, What If) and Linda Gannon Foster (ABC’s Quantico, Pilgrimage).
Lillis starred in Warner Bros. Pictures‘ “IT” back in 2017. The film was an instant hit for the studio, bringing in over $123M on opening weekend before grossing over $700M worldwide. “IT: Chapter 2” is scheduled to premiere on September 6, 2019 and will be directed by Andres Muschietti.
