The latest video clip from “Creed II” puts the focus on Creed’s upcoming opponent, Viktor Drago. The fight puts a spin on the “Rocky IV” story, where Rocky fought Viktor’s father, Ivan Drago, after Ivan killed Creed’s father Apollo Creed. Now Viktor will be fighting Rocky’s protege in the ring, hoping to win honor for the Drago name. The film is set to hit theaters later this month, though it will have some heavyweight competition at the box office.
The studio described the trailer adding, “Life has become a balancing act for Adonis Creed. Between personal obligations and training for his next big fight, he is up against the challenge of his life. Facing an opponent with ties to his family’s past only intensifies his impending battle in the ring.” The studio continued, “Rocky Balboa is there by his side through it all and, together, Rocky and Adonis will confront their shared legacy, question what’s worth fighting for, and discover that nothing’s more important than family. Creed II is about going back to basics to rediscover what made you a champion in the first place, and remembering that, no matter where you go, you can’t escape your history.”
Joining Michael B. Jordan in the film are Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Wood Harris, Russell Hornsby, Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu, Andre Ward, Phylicia Rashad, and Dolph Lundgren. The sequel was directed by Steven Caple Jr., the first installment was written and directed by Ryan Coogler.
“Creed II” will need some fancy footwork to top the original, though it’s expected to surpass the first installment in worldwide box office gross. The original film opened in third-place back in 2015 with a $29M weekend, behind the wildly popular “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” and Disney’s “The Good Dinosaur”. “Creed” made over $109M domestically and grossed over $173M worldwide. Sylvester Stallone was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role at the Oscars and won the award at the Golden Globes.
“Creed II” will open one-week after “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” which could split the box office in its follow up weekend. “Creed II” is opening against “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Robin Hood” with Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Jamie Dornan, and Eve Hewson.
MGM will release “Creed II” in theaters on November 21, 2018.
