It looks like Disney/Lucasfilm is putting Boba Fett in Carbonite for now, studio execs have confirmed with multiple outlets that the standalone film won’t be moving forward. This doesn’t mean a permanent end to Boba Fett, or any chance of a standalone film in the future, but right now it’s just far, far, away. THR was the first outlet to break the news.

A number of factors could have lead Disney to put Fett on the back burner for now, including the upcoming project from Jon Favreau that will be available on Disney’s exclusive streaming service. That live-action series is called “The Mandalorian,” which is the name of the people that come from the planet Mandalore, where Boba Fett gets his iconic look. The new series takes place after the fall of the Empire but before The First Order rises to power. This is a pretty open area, covered more in the “Aftermath” series when the good guys were still tracking down the last of the Empire and its few remaining Star Destroyers. If you haven’t read those books yet, they are fantastic and we have recommended both the written and audio versions that are fully produced. You can find them here on Amazon and they are considered to be the same canon as the films.

There’s also “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which was the studio’s first disappointment at the box office. That film made $84M on its opening weekend domestically but only reached $392M worldwide. To put that in perspective, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” made over $220M on its opening weekend and grossed over $1.3B worldwide. Fans lackluster support for young Han Solo’s timeline, which is the same timeline that a standalone Boba Fett movie would most likely take place in, was probably a red flag for Disney.

Since the debut of Star Wars’ Han Solo film, the studio has decided to slow down the releases of future Star Wars films. That being said, we still want Ewan McGregor to make a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi film as quickly as possible.
