There are a lot of similarities between a traditional Escape Room and the movie “Saw,” when you make a movie about an Escape Room the lines blur even more. Sony Pictures released an official trailer for “Escape Room” today, showing off the new thriller before it hits theaters later this winter.
According to the studio, “Escape Room” is a psychological thriller about six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to find the clues or die. The film was directed by Adam Robitel, working from a screenplay written by Bragi Schut and Maria Melnik. The thriller could capitalize on the sudden spark of Deborah Ann Woll, who recently wrapped “Silver Lake” and is currently a crowd-favorite in the Netflix series “Marvel’s Daredevil”. It might not be a coincidence that Sony Pictures released the new trailer for “Escape Room” just as “Daredevil: Season 3” launched on Netflix.
Produced by Neal H. Moritz and Ori Marmur, the film stars Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine, Nik Dodani, and features Yorick van Wageningen. Fans of the thriller genre can watch the official trailer below.
“Escape Room,” which is more fun to say in a Dory voice as “Es cap eh Room,” is releasing in January against the horror-thriller “Eli” from director Ciaran Foy. The other big thrillers scheduled to release that month include M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” with Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy, and Sarah Paulson; and the thriller “Serenity” from director Steven Knight with Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, and Diane Lane. “Glass” is the front runner to win the box office charts that weekend but it will be interesting to see if Sony’s “Escape Room” can ignite the thriller box office earlier in the month.
