ABC is sticking with the new freshman comedy “Single Parents,” the network announced today that the company has given a full-season order to the new series. The announcement was made by Channing Dungey, president, ABC Entertainment, just as hits like “The Conners” and “The Rookie” start to bring in viewers of their own. “Single Parents” stars Taran Killam as Will Cooper, Leighton Meester as Angie D’Amato, Kimrie Lewis as Poppy Banks, Jake Choi as Miggy Park, Marlow Barkley as Sophie Cooper, Tyler Wladis as Graham D’Amato, Devin Trey Campbell as Rory Banks, Mia Allan as Emma Fogerty, Ella Allan as Amy Fogerty and Brad Garrett as Douglas Fogerty.
The show has been a big hit for ABC, in the Live + 3 Day ratings, “Single Parents” is the number-two new comedy of the season in Adults 18-49, behind only ABC’s “The Conners”. The show ranks number-two in its highly competitive Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. slot. On average through its first three episodes, the ABC freshman comedy is drawing an audience of 5.6 million viewers. The series is from 20th Century Fox Television and ABC Studios. JJ Philbin and Elizabeth Meriwether are creators and executive producers. As for “The Conners,” that show is doing even better. The series opened as TV’s top new series, as “The Rookie” brought in a seven year high as a drama debut in its slot. While competing against NBC’s “The Voice” and “This Is Us,” ABC took 2nd place on Tuesday night in Adults 18-49, beating CBS’ “NCIS”-led drama lineup by 30% and Fox’s drama lineup of “Gifted” and “Lethal Weapon” by 117%. ABC’s “The Conners” opened as Tuesday’s top TV show among Adults 18-49, beating out NBC’s “The Voice” and “This Is Us”.
At 8:00 p.m., “The Conners” premiered as TV’s top series debut this season in viewers (10.5 million) and young adults, topping NBC’s “Manifest” (10.4 million). In fact, it was TV’s most-watched series debut since ABC’s “The Good Doctor” opened last September. “The Conners” ranks as ABC’s most-watched comedy series debut in 4 years and best in 3 years with Adults 18-49 – since 9/24/14 and 9/22/15, respectively.
