Sony Pictures is already hard at work on the new “Men in Black” installment, a spinoff starring Rebecca Ferguson, Chris Hemsworth, and Tessa Thompson. The film is being directed by F. Gary Gray and is expected to hit theaters in 2019.
While the plot is being kept secret at this time, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are teasing pictures from the set to get fans excited for the new release. This isn’t the first film that Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson have teamed up together to make a blockbuster, the duo worked together on the Marvel film “Thor: Ragnarok” back in 2017. Considering that “Thor: Ragnarok” made over $853M at the global box office, “MIB 4” seems to be in very good hands.
Sony Pictures is hoping to bring the sleepy franchise back to life at the box-office with the new leads next year. The two stars have some pretty big black suits to fill, the original “Men in Black” debuted at number-one back in 1997 with a $51M opening weekend before going on to make over $589M at the global box-office. The first film was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starred Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. The trio returned for “Men in Black II” in 2002, with Rip Torn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Johnny Knoxville, Rosario Dawson, and Tony Shalhoub on the cast sheet. That installment had a $52M opening but failed to beat the original when it topped the global box office with $441M. Then came “M.I.B. 3,” this time with Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, and Josh Brolin. The third installment hit a new record with a $54.5M debut and a worldwide gross of $624M.
With three successful films under its belt, the franchise took a break in 2012. With Smith and Jones not returning for the fourth installment, Hemsworth and Thompson will have to start a trilogy all their own in 2019.
