Focus Features has confirmed the release date for the highly-anticipated “Downton Abbey” film. The studio has dated both the North American and International releases, now scheduled for September 20th, 2019 in North America and September 13th, 2019 internationally. The international release will go through Universal Pictures. Academy-Award winner Julian Fellowes, the creator of ‘Downton Abbey,’ wrote the screenplay and is serving as producer with Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. Michael Engler is coming back to direct the film.
Produced through Carnival Films, the film will include the original principal cast. “Downton Abbey” will star Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Penelope Wilton, and Academy-Award winner Maggie Smith. The film will also add to the cast, with new cast members Academy-Award nominee Imelda Staunton, Geraldine James, Simon Jones, David Haig, Tuppence Middleton, Kate Phillips and Stephen Campbell Moore.
The television series ran for 6 seasons and earned 3 Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, and 69 Emmy nominations in total. The show was the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys. The series even picked up a BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record.
“Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” commented Focus chairman Peter Kujawski. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen next September.”
